The Board Examination must be sat by Overseas Trained Dietitians who have had their dietetic qualifications recognised. New Zealand Registered Dietitians who have not worked as a dietitian for more than 2 years and who wish to return to dietetic practice may also be required to sit it.
The Board Examination consists of two stages:
Stage 1 – Written examination (Multi Choice Questions – MCQ)
The MCQ is held twice a year (usually around March and September). The next MCQ exam is being held on 7 March 2019, applications for the exam have closed.
The MCQ exam will also be offered on 5 September 2019. To be eligible to sit the September exam your application for Recognition of Qualifications must be submitted by15 May 2019, and applications for the exam will close 26 June 2019. The MCQ exam will also be offered in March 2020.
Please ensure your documentation is complete when you send it in and your referees meet this deadline to ensure your assessment can be completed to enable you to apply to sit the MCQ if your qualifications are recognised by the Board.
Late applications cannot be accepted.
You apply for the MCQ through the DAA – email@example.com – payment is made directly to the DAA – contact them directly for the current fee, as at 1 January 2019 it is AUS$1,350
A verification process is in place with DAA and the Board.
A cancellation fee will be applied if candidates withdraw from an exam.
This examination can be sat outside New Zealand.
The examination centre within New Zealand for the MCQ is Wellington.
You must pass the written examination to be eligible to sit the oral examination – you have 3 attempts only to pass the MCQ.Information about the written examination and oral examination and recommended reading can be found in the column on the left

APPLICATIONS FOR THE SEPTEMBER 2019 MCQ EXAM WILL CLOSE 26 JUNE – no late applications will be accepted.
Stage 2- Oral examination
The Oral Examination is held twice a year (usually in May and November) – the next Oral exam will be held on Saturday 2 November 2019.
This examination must be sat in New Zealand – the examination centre is Auckland..
Only those who have successfully completed the written examination can sit the oral examination.
Application and payment is made directly to the Dietitians Board – the current fee is $1000.
If you fail the oral examination you are allowed to re-sit it – you only can have 3 attempts.
Both the written and oral examinations must be passed within the same three year period.
If you are resitting an examination your assessment for eligibility to sit the examination must be current (including the IELTS, OET).
Your original assessment for eligibility is current for three years.
If your original assessment for eligibility is out of date you will be required to reapply for an assessment for eligibility to sit the examination and pay the appropriate fee.
